BODROGKERESZTÚR

Lying on the banks of the River Bodrog this is a village surronded by historical vineyards. Archeological evidence suggests that this area has been inhabited since prehistorical times. Some historians believe that this settlement was home to a metal smelting workshop, the artefacts supporting this theory are exhibited at Keresztúri Kincsestár. With its excellent wineries, historical sights and gorgeous viewpoint Bodrogkeresztúr is a gem of the region.

 

Places to visit: the grave of the wonder rabbi, Rebbe Shaya’la, Keresztúri Kincsestár, Panoráma viewpoint, Szent Kereszt Roman Catholic Church.

 

Keresztúri Kincsestár: The exhibition center was developed when the cellar network lying below the building of the Municipality was renovated. Besides the interactive exhibition rare archeological findings are on display including the ones discovered at Dereszla-Hill dating from the 13th century BC. Copies of the „Dereszla treasure” consisting of golden jewellery can be seen together with other valuable Bronze Age artefacts.

BODROGKISFALUD

On the banks of the River Bodrog there is a charming little village awaiting visitors yearning for peace and quiet. Bodrogkisfalud offers idyllic scenery, neat and tidy streets, cozy squares. First mentioned as Kysfalud in historical documents in 1220 it later acquired the prefix ’Bodrog’ because of its closeness to the river. Lovers of the countryside are welcome by a host of well-equipped guesthouses and excellent wineries.

 

Places to visit: Szent Anna Roman Catholic Church, Traditional House.

 

Kalóz Port & Yacht Club: River Bodrog is highly suitable for water sports, the port offers many different services: jetskis, wakeboards, waterskis, motor boats and even a smaller ship can be rented. Party boats are particularly poplular with young people, these boats can carry 12 people and are equipped with wifi connection and refigerators. Right next to the port there is a fish and chips restaurant where you can sample freshly caught fish, fish soup and even goulash.

ERDŐBÉNYE

Like a tiny treasure chest Erdőbénye is surrounded and hidden by woods. It has a long and glorious history of cooperage. Many of the nearby vineyards bear names connecting them to curious myths of origin: i.e. legend has it that in the Ördögkősor-vineyard (’Devilstonerow’) an alleged witch was burnt. Kolera-vineyard got its name because during the Cholera pandemic it was used as a burial site for the deceased. The Omlás-vineyard (’Abyss’) offers stunning views of Erdőbénye. Today the village is home to many excellent wineries and with its homely atmosphere and beautiful surroundings is a favourite among tourists.

 

Places to visit: Bánya Lake, Memorial Park of Famous Erdőbényians, Mulató-Hill, Szepsi Laczkó Máté House, Traditional House.

 

Traditional House: This pretty farmer’s home was built in 1770 and it comprises of a living room, a guest room and a kitchen with an open cimney. For a long time the cellar was used as an ice-pit because this was the building that housed the first butcher shop in the village. The traditionally furnished house offers the chance to visitors to acquaint themselves with various crafts: viticulture, coopery and wood carving. In the large and neatly organized yard there is a wood oven and bbq facility.

HERCEGKÚT

The small village was inhabited by Swabians in the 18th century who were invited by Prince Trautson to repopulate the depopulated villages of the region. In 1750 57 families moved in. The village has loyally upheld its Swabian heritage ever since. Today Hercegkút is famous for its excellent wines, two historical rows of cellars and its beautiful surroundings.

 

Places to visit: Gombos-hill row of cellars, Gombos-hill Calvary and Chapel, Kőporos row of cellars, Svabian Traditional House.

 

Gombos-hill row of cellars: The row of cellars is the oldest part of the settlement. Originally it functioned as homes for the German settlers with subterranean flats. When the settlers moved in the village the cellars were used to store wine and vegetables. There is a path leading from the village to the pretty cellars which are parts of the UNESCO World Heritage. You won’t find another row of cellars anywhere with 2 storey buildings and a uniform style.

MÁD

Topography, location and the fact that it has always been inhabited by a well-to-do community make the village of Mád a natural hub of the Tokaj-Hegyalja region. Its significance is further underlined by the fact that one fifth of the total area under vine in Tokaj belongs to Mád. The future of Mád clearly lies in winemaking and gastronomy.

 

Places to visit: Aspremont Castle, Borsay Castle, Mád Synagogue, Pulszky House, Rabbi House, Szent Tamás-vineyard, Király-vineyard, Úrágya-vineyard.

 

Mád Synagogue: Jewish settlers arrived in Mád in the early 1700s and took up farming and making wine. The Synagogue was built in 1795. The stones used for the construction were collected and transported exclusively by Jews, including women and children, as people of other religions were not allowed to touch them. Besides the Synagogue a famous school was also established. The Synagogue is an architectural masterpiece, it is one of only two synagogues in Central-Europe built in Zopf style. The unadorned facade hides a lavishly ornamented interior. After years of neglect its reconstruction was completed in 2004 and today the Synagogue can be seen in its full splendour in the center of Mád. To acknowledge the quality of the restoration the building was awarded the Europa Nostra-award also known as the „architectural Oscar”.

MEZŐZOMBOR

The first historical reference to this village dates from 1298, it was called ’Sumbor’ then, named after the son of Lehel. It used to be an archdeaconate and for a period it belonged to members of the Rákóczi-dynasty. Today this a quiet village, its main attraction being the historical Disznókő Estate.

 

Places to visit: Andrássy Park, Lake Bor, Filagória viewpoint, Tokaj-Hegyalja Market.

 

Filagória viewpoint: One of the most popular viewpoints of Hegyalja stands right next to Disznókő Estate. It offers an unrivalled view of the Unesco World Heritage region and the winery. The view of Mount Kopasz in the distance is breathtaking. If you are arriving to Hegyalja on Road 37 you will surely notice the silhouette of the white pavillon. The place got its name after a stone resembling a wild boar. Disznókő-vineyard was first mentioned in historical documents in 1413. The viewpoint was built by the Lónyay Family in the 19th century.

OLASZLISZKA

Originally most of the inhabitants were Slavs and the limits of the village were marked by a hazel tree and ’liska’ means hazel tree in old Slavic languages, so this is where the second part of the name comes from. Following the Mongolian raids the village was depopulated and King Béla IV invited Italian settlers and the village was referred to as the „Land of the Italians” in the charter of donation (’olasz’ means ’Italian’ in Hungarian).

 

Places to visit: Baba-bridge, Kossuth House, Nagyboldogasszony Roman Catholic Church, International Artist Site, Porcelaine Doll Collection, Traktér – disused Pauline Cloister, Holocaust Memorial Site.

 

Holocaust Memorial Site: The first Jewish settlers arrived in the 17th century nad built their Synagogue in the mid-19th century. Like in all other communities in Hegyalja, the Jews were transported to Auschwitz in 1944. On the ruins of the Synagogue a memorial site was built the main element of which is a facade commemorating the original building. Only the eastern wall and the Torah niche have survived from the Synagogue but with the facade rebuilt one can get a proper sense of the size of the original structure.

SZERENCS

Szerencs is often referred to as „the gate” of Tokaj-Hegyalja. The tower-like gates built from ashlar symbolize this special position and mark the entrance to a unique landscape. The modern history of the town is closely linked to the sugar mill and chocolate factory. One of the most popular events of the region is the National Chocolate Festival held in every August which provides a wide range of entertainment to visitors of all ages.

 

Places to visit: Rákóczi Castle – Zemplén Museum, Szerencs Spa & Wellness House, Szerencs Chocolate Factory, regular exhibitions at the Tourist Center (vintage motorcycles, vintage toys and chocolate sculptures), World Heritage Gate.

 

Szerencs Spa & Wellness House: In the Middle Ages the knights of Saint John were regular visitors of the spas found in Szerencs. The first public baths in Hungary were built in the 19th century and the one in Szerencs was built in a stunning Art Noveau style. Today the building houses a popular, modern, well-equipped spa with services including a jacuzzi whirlpool and cool water dipping pool, an aromatherapy steam chamber, a salt chamber, Finnish and infra saunas and a swimming pool. With its air of K.u.K nostalgia the edifice is one of the prides of the town.

TARCAL

Tarcal is a village with a long history; it was donated to Captain Tarcal by Prince Árpád. An important event of Hungarian history is connected to this village: in 1110 Coloman the Learned, King of Hungary ordered the national assembly to convene in Tarcal and it was at this diet that he stated: „witches do not exist”. Tarcal is continuously developing village offering exciting events and beautiful sights.

 

Places to visit: Christ, the Blesser statue and panorama promenade, Hatputtonyos Wine Village, Tarcal bottle, Terézia Chapel, Synagogue.

 

Christ, the Blesser statue and panorama promenade: The most monumental sight of the region is the 8.5 meter tall statue of Christ towering above Tarcal. It was created by Attila Petró, who saw a Jesus image in Terézia Chapel which inspired him to make the Christ statue one of the biggest of its kind in Hungary. From the top you can enjoy a 360˚ view of the mining lake, the vineyards and in the distance the horizon of the Great Plain.

TOKAJ

This is the town that the whole wine region takes its name from. The town of Tokaj awaits visitors with a host of charming cellars and exciting events. Due to its geographical location – this is where the North Hungarian Mountain meets the Great Hungarian Plain and it is at the confluence of the rivers Bodrog and Tisza – Tokaj was an important market town and a vital stop on the trade route connecting Hungary with Poland. Furthetmore Mount Kopasz provides optimal conditions for high quality viticulture. There are some beguiling squares and streets in the town center so it’s highly recommended activity to explore it on foot.

World Heritage Wine Museum: A unique attraction in the heart of Tokaj. The exhibition provides an in depth insight into the past and present of winemaking in Tokaj-Hegyalja, but there is also a section dedicated to other World Heritage wine regions in Europe called „Wines, Travellers, Tokaj”. The exhibition explains the ins and outs of the world famous Tokaj wines, soil types, cooperage and the history of the region.
