Portius Cellar was built in 2006 in the cellar row of the Gombos-hegyi Pincesor. Its exterior and interior both blend the modern and traditional features of Tokaj-Hegyalja.
Due to Robert Wojciech Portius, the Polish wine merchant from the 17th century, the cellar has a peculiar atmosphere. By choosing this name the owner/winemaker pays homage to the traditions of Tokaj-Hegyalja and the historical Polish-Hungarian friendship.
The winery manages 12 hectares of vineyards of outstanding quality in the historical region. Among the favourites of the winemaker the elegant, high-structured wines made of the Hárslevelű grape variety from the Kincsem Terroir (formerly known as Waldbott Mansion) are to be listed. During the vegetation period the selection of bunches and sprouts is carried out several times in Megyer Vineyard near Sárospatak and on the downhills of Király Mountain. Wines of the Furmint grape variety from these territories are much favoured by
Polish and Hungarian tourists alike.
The elegant, exciting and characteristic wines of Portius Cellar are the result of the diversity in volcanic rocks, respect of Nature and careful and professional winemaking. The spiritual heritage and challenge given to the local winemakers by Tokaj-Hegyalja can only be approached by taking a great deal of responsibility. It is the duty of those dealing with vinelands and wines to produce wines that are recognised under the name of TOKAJ all over the world.
