Gróf Degenfeld Wine Estate and Castle Hotel****

In 1994 the Count Degenfeld family successfully revived its wine estate in the Tokaj wine region following their over 150-year-old tradition. A love of nature and respect for traditions has always gone hand in hand with winemaking and today all this is combined with modern technology. The winery is producing dry wines and sweet wine specialities from the three main varieties of the region: Furmint, Hárslevelű and Muscat Blanc (Yellow Muscat). These wine specialities include sweet late harvest wines, Szamorodni and the famous Aszú wines.

The 35 hectares of vineyards are located in Mád and Tarcal and the winery owns some historical sites like Terézia and Zomborka. Since 2009 all the vineyards have been managed by certified organic cultivation. 2017 was the first vintage released with organic labels.

The estate opened its elegant four-star hotel with twenty-one rooms evoking the era of Monarchy in the century-old building of the historical mansion. Together with the vineyards, the winery and the beautiful park the Hotel creates a complete Château style estate lying at the foot of the Theresa-hill.

With a capacity to host 60 guests the castle restaurant offers delicious meals prepared by the chef Attila Solymosi and of course the top-rated wines of the winery to match the dishes. The cuisine is international, the raw materials and the flavours are mainly Hungarian. The menu is constantly being renewed and during wine dinners the meals are adjusted to match the served wines perfectly.

The chapel located on the top of the Theresa-hill was built by Count Antal Grassalkovich in honour for Maria Theresa and her generous donations. The building was badly damaged during the Second World War and for decades remained mostly in ruins. The Count Degenfeld family refurbished it in 2015, and today it is one of the most remarkable stops of the Maria-lane passing through Tarcal. A walking path through the vineyards leads directly to the chapel from the hotel. The chapel with the surrounding green park provides a unique, stunning place for engagements, wedding ceremonies, christenings and other events.
