Dereszla Winery

Dereszla is one of the wineries with the most illustrious history in the Tokaj wine region. The Bodrogkeresztúr based winery was first mentioned in historical documents at the beginning of the 15th century. From the 1450s it belonged to the holdings of the Hunyadi family. At the time of the Ottoman occupation it was owned by the Habsburgs. From 1605 the farm on the northern side of the Dereszla-hill and the surrounding vineyards were in the hands of the Transylvanian Princes Bocskai and Bethlen.

Following the 1645 Linz Peace Treaty it became an important holding of the Rákóczis. In 1691 Julianna Rákóczi married the French Count Ferdinand-Gobert Aspremont-Reckheim, following his death the Aspremonts were left without a male heir and with the marriage of the only daughter the Bodrogkeresztúr winery became a Wolkenstein estate. Until 1945 it was the Wolkensteins who managed the estate and its four wineries. After WW2 it became state owned and was managed by the Tokaji Borforgalmi Vállalat, later it functioned as the negociant branch and the ageing cellar of Tokaji Borkombinát. After the fall of communism it was bought by a French company and finally in 2016 it changed hands again and today it is owned by a Hungarian firm.

The current structure of the cellar network is a reflection of its checkered history. Thanks to the developments in the 19th and 20th centuries the cellar labyrinth lying deep below Dereszla-hill is an ideal location to age top quality aszú wines.

At two different sites Dereszla Winery is currently equipped to process 800.000 kg of grapes harvested on 130 hectares. It is a vital strategic element of their operation that they strive to integrate the professionally committed family farms into the production system.

Besides the production of aszús there is a growing emphasis on dry wines and sparkling wines. 80% of the wineries products are sold abroad in over 40 countries. The most important foreign markets are: France, the USA, the UK, Scandinavian countries and Japan. As the recipients of many awards for their sweet and dry wines Dereszla is committed to quality winemaking and the sales of wines which are worthy of Tokaj’s historical reputation.
