Dobogó Winery

Dobogó Winery was founded in 1995 by the Family Zwack which is a very famous and prestigious family in Hungary, well-known for their herbal liqueur or bitter, drunk as a digestive and aperitif, named Unicum. Currently the Winery is owned by Izabella Zwack and the winemaker Attila Domokos. The Winery cultivates five hectares on the volcanic soil of first growths in Mád, in the Betsek, Szent Tamás and Úrágya Vineyards.

Today, Dobogó is a small winery renowned for its small quantity of stellar wines and for the capacity to marry Tokaj’s centuries of heritage and tradition with a young, fresh, original attitude. The vineyards are cultivated and the wines are made in a natural way since 2003. The wines are sold in more than 15 countries all over the world.

Dobogó literally means “clippity clop”, the sound of horses’ hooves on the paved streets of the little town of Tokaj. This is what we found out when we bought the winery, an abandoned house dating back to 1869 with underneath it a magical cellar so typical in the region for it is where the wines would be hidden from the marauding armies that often would ravage through on their way to battle. I thought it was a legend until I spent the first night at the winery and woke up to that beautiful sound”, says Izabella Zwack, founder of Dobogó Winery. Nowadays the house has a special Mediterranean atmosphere with oreganos, basils, figs and a 45-year-old lemon tree in the garden and plenty of Italian furnishing inside.

Since its establishment Dobogó Winery has won several precious Hungarian and International awards and regional trophies.

The winery has been making 6 puttonyos Aszú and dry Estate Furmint in every vintage since 2003. They also have single vineyard wines, dry Pinot Noir, late harvest and sweet Szamorodni in their portfolio. They produce Natúr Eszencia in the best vintages.

Tokaj-Hegyalja is more than just wine. When walking through the vineyards make sure to stop at the highest points to admire the views, to see how the lowlands meet the mountains.
